FASHION may not be your forte, but have you ever wondered whether you’d look as good as that mannequin in the shop window if you were wearing what she has on? Have you ever hankered to be on someone’s best-dressed list? And who doesn’t want to look chic and effortlessly stylish anyway?

True, not all of us are born with the “style gene” or have enough in the bank to hire our own stylist. But there are always shortcuts: the fashion magazines, the style channel on cable, the website, friends who are fashionistas.

Then there’s the Philippine Fashion Week, the brainchild of brothers Joey and Audie Espino of Runway Production. If you missed that, we’re sharing our notes with you. SIM did some fashion homework and put together a tightly edited shortlist from the thousands of amazing outfits and loads of local talent out there. After all, our closets can only hold so much fabulousness.

First we asked fashion writer Nikki Santiago and Manila’s top designer Rajo Laurel, who is also a judge of “Project Runway Philippines” to tick off their top 3 picks of the season and what spark they look for in a new designer that signals upcoming success.

Nikki Santiago’s List:

1) Kermit Tesoro + Leeroy New. This tandem works so well. Their thought-provoking sartorial propositions and inventive designs have loads of that wow factor. The longer you look at their designs, the more intrigued you get. Their synergy is really something to watch out for.

2) Enrico Carado. His collection showcased at the recent Fashion Week Holiday 2010 is definitely in my Top 3 list. His mix of fabrics and design techniques is decidedly a signal of ingenuity.

3) John Paras. Up till this moment, I can’t stop lusting over his peacock dress. John’s design sensibilities have the ability to make one swoon and drool. I think he has a way with details that makes a dress mesmerizing.

Signs that a designer is on his way up: If they can come up with designs that will make you think, “Wow, how did they do that?” Designs that linger, that are compelling, that you want to stare at for hours, designs that make you think. If a designer can achieve that, aside from great fit and impeccable stitching, then I think he or she is one to watch in fashion.

Rajo Laurel’s List:

1) Martin Bautista, for his design sensibilities and aesthetics. He designs for real women and his work is real and current.

2) Veejay Floresca is fun and has great PR sense. To me his clothes are exciting and relevant.

3) Kermit Tesoro with Leeroy New – really different and more avante garde. They were the only ones who really made me stand up straight and take notice in the last fashion week.

What a designer needs to succeed: Professionalism, hard work, resilience, perseverance and talent plus a dash of good luck! Above all that, it’s love! LOVE for me is what makes good designers GREAT!

To get inside their head and find out what sets off their passion and genius, SIM asked these designers two questions:

SIM: What do you consider an ideal client?

Martin Bautista: A woman who knows what she wants, who is not afraid to take risks – a woman who doesn’t care if the look is too simple or too over the top. Someone who has personal style and individuality.

Veejay Floresca: I love designing clothes for women who are confident and who enjoy fashion.

Enrico Carado: My ideal clients are fearless and experimental women since most my clothes are eccentric, fearless and experimental as well. Women who are not afraid to get out of their comfort zones, and always have the desire to stand out.

Kermit Tesoro: Ideal client: women who share the same vision – dead or alive.

John Paras: My ideal client is a lady who is confident enough to look different. She appreciates the finer side of fashion and knows herself very well so she doesn’t take in trends that much. She dresses up for herself or her lifestyle.

SIM: What inspires your designs?

Martin Bautista: I get inspiration from what I feel each woman should have. I get excited when I talk to women and I love the idea that each has a different story. I get inspired by their way of living and what they do.

Veejay Floresca: My clients inspire me a lot – their personality, lifestyle and style – and I infuse them with my aesthetics.

Enrico Carado: My inspirations are of many kinds – tangible and intangible. Oftentimes I am inspired by my mistakes and failures – this is what gives me the drive to always strive to do my best every time. I also get inspiration from the elements of nature, and also from fantasies, like some things that we often thought never existed.

Kermit Tesoro: Inspiration: cerebral.

John Paras: Anything inspires me. We should keep our eyes open and appreciate how beautiful the world is, as well as the cultures and art of its people.

As school season approaches, I decided to feature three young entrepreneurs for this “Tagumpay” column.

I am a parent with two of my children in college. One is about to finish. I am glad that many schools have started to integrate entrepreneurship into the business management programs and other school programs. Even in high school, the Department of Education has been encouraging entrepreneurship subjects. The DepEd has also been encouraging students to participate in many of our Go Negosyo events all over the country.

The level of awareness of being an entrepreneur as an alternative to being employed has increased since our advocacy started. Our books continue to be bestsellers, which are admired by many young people who want to be entrepreneurs.

I myself want my kids to start their own businesses and not work for the RFM Corporation. I do not want my Sunday family gathering to become a management meeting, which I see happening in many family-run businesses.

I also do not encourage fresh graduates to immediately start a business without the proper business plan and concept that will have a differentiation in the market. For those who want to start at a young age, a mentor is also a must. Be patient. Focus on your skill level. Don’t venture into something you do not know about. But provided you have the big idea and you have the skill to convert that big idea into a business and you are properly guided by mentors, then go for it.

These are three stories of young entrepreneurs who all converted their big ideas into their own businesses. Be inspired and learn from them.

Another young entrepreneur to admire is fashion designer Veejay Floresca. When he was 16, Veejay’s father was killed while working on a case as a lawyer. “Life went down,” he said. His mother was forced to work as a street vendor and his three siblings also made sacrifices.

Despite the tragedy, Veejay entered the College of Saint Benilde’s School of Design and Arts as a working student. He was able to maintain a full scholarship and finished cum laude with a degree in Fashion Design and Merchandising.

Veejay’s first step was to work as a head designer in a friend’s shop, which became his training ground. After a year, he put up his own shop in his apartment and converted his sala into his receiving area. With this, Veejay served as the breadwinner in the family. He was able to put his sister through school. His savings moved his family to a better place.

Because of his passion for fashion, unique and undeniable skills and natural talent, Veejay has been recognized as an icon in his industry. While some remember his stint as a finalist on the reality show Project Runway Philippines, he was also recognized as one of the 25 Best Fashion Designers of the Philippines by Mega magazine in 2007. We also awarded him as one of our Most Inspiring Young Entrepreneurs along with Alvin and Benedict.

With his recognitions, a growing number of clients and rising reputation, Veejay does not fail to be thankful for all the opportunities and blessings. He considers them “priceless.” As a way of giving back, he reaches out and teaches other aspiring young fashion designers who would like to convert their creativity into works of art and entrepreneurial opportunities. “It’s a blessing to share what I have learned,” says Veejay.

At 25 years old, Veejay keeps on adding to the long list of things he wants to accomplish. His future plans include finishing a master’s in fashion in New York or London before reaching 30.

“Enjoy youth and at the same time do something with your life,” says Veejay. “Always have a direction in life. Dream, have a goal and do something to reach it.”

Philippine Fashion Week 2010

It's my dream to present a full collection.

As a young designer, it is a great accomplishment to put up an entire collection. This is my 6th time to join Phil Fashion Week and I always do 10-pc, BUT.. this is my first time to execute a 30pc collection.

Can i do this? haha.. I took the challenge and few days from now, i will be showing my collection for Philippine Fashion Week Holiday 2010 (we dont have Fall/Winter here so its called Holiday)

My inspiration is the iconic statue of Venus de Milo. It's imperfect, unfinished but very beautiful.

My collection will celebrate unusual silhouettes, deformed structures, uneven proportions, unfinished details, textures and a lot of draping. I can really say that "imperfections make the clothes more interesting.."

Raquel is super duper nice :-) she knows what she likes.. i admire her so much.. successful.. an epitome of an empowered woman!

I can still remember when we had our first meeting. She asked me to design her wedding gown and her theme was "modern filipinana.." not the typical, something contemporary and very feminine.. and i really liked the challenge! :-) Instead of the typical off shoulder neckline, i made her a loose structured band made of silk pina.. ruched bodice with side panels made of callado with handmade embroidery.. and the elaborate skirt had ____ (a lot haha) yards of organdy.. she also requested to have a very dramatic back detail: a corsage of handmade flowers made of mikado silk with ostrich feathers! :-)

and to complete the look, i told her to find a super nice vintage hair accessory and when i saw what she got, i couldn't say anything but "I LOVE IT!"

"I admire humble people. I don't easily get impressed with the wealth, the fame, or even the wits. Talent is crucial but for me, it is not the gauge of how good a person is. That's why I love Veejay Floresca. At 24, he is already on top of the ladder; in the pinnacle of his career. Very fresh. Very new. Very exciting. The talk of the town. But he isn't blinded by the flashes of lights nor the zenith of his success.

In his blog, Veejay relayed his story, his father who despite the challenges in life managed to be a lawyer. They were able to go to reputable schools because his parents strived hard to give them good education. He wanted to pursue law to follow the footsteps of his beloved father but just like a blessing in disguise, fate took a different turn and he landed his feet in CSB, a scholar of fashion design.

When talent is innate, it shouts from within, ready to explode, wanting to be free and run wild. After college, Veejay's unbelievable talent made him head designer at Accent & Details, a clothing shop, where he learned the ABCs of client servicing and the business visage of fashion. But when good things are bound to happen, the whole universe will conspire to make it come true. And then just like a genie in a lamp, Project Runway Philippines made his dream come to life. Although he didn't win the competition, Veejay proved that when good things befall to winners, the BEST things usually happen to the runners-up.

And the rest is history. Now Veejay Floresca is now a very popular name, from runways, to the corners of showbusiness to wedding forums and numerous events. But what's amazing is not how Veejay was able to take hold of his success at a very very young age but how he manages to have his feet still on the ground. The Red Queen of Hearts will be humiliated on how Veejay manages to have his head be the same size as it was before. Aside from that, Veejay never fails to thank the One who gives him bountiful blessings - the Almighty God.

I love Veejay. When I see him, he will always be the one to approach me. When I have question, he replies like a lightning - very fast. And when I give him kudos, he will always say thank you.

Yes I am plugging Veejay Floresca. You will not regret it- when you give him a simple visit in his shop, he will give you a heartwarming service and friendship in return. :)"

I am extremely blessed!

First, I would like to thank God for all the blessings He gave me.

I am just a young designer, dreaming that someday, i will have my own atelier for my dearest clients.. And last night, I just dedicated my new atelier to God. Thank you to our dear Pastora Beng for coming to share God's words and lead the dedication/blessing of my business to our Heavenly Father. Thank u also to my bible study/connect groupmates for coming to celebrate with me.. ;-) I have learned that we are all stewards of God. Everything is his property.. It's from him.. we just need to take good care of all the things he gave us and share it to other people.. Praise God!

I can still remember the days when I started meeting clients at starbucks, coffee shops, malls.. Then, i worked for my friend and he was so generous to share his office with me.. then i rented an apartment and transformed the sala set into an office.. And now, I have a separate space for my valued clients ;-)

I am very happy for all the inquiries that I have been getting from future brides and clients.. debuts, weddings, special events, and most especially, kind and sweet messages that inspire me more.. Thank you so much for showing interest and for trusting me :-)

Special thank you to W@W! :-) and to my past brides and friends for all the recommendations.. I am truly blessed! Thank you so much.. Here are some of our official wedding photos where your gorgeous creation takes center stage! I received nothing but praises for my dress. And a lot of my friends who weren't at the wedding, but saw our photos, were in awe of the dress. It was a beautiful wedding gown, Veejay, I really couldn't be happier. It wasn't over the top, it displayed just the right amount of oomph, I would say. Thank you for making me feel like a million bucks on my wedding day. It was hard to maneuver, I can tell you that haha, but with all the oohs and aahs it merited, I'd say it was definitely worth it.

Also thank you for being a part of my wedding, thank you for driving all the way to Tagaytay to make sure I look my damnedest in that dress. It was a pleasure working with you. You've been very gracious, warm and open to me and fiance (now my husband) Mart. I look forward to working with you again I hope. :)

I wasn't able to attend the finals last year at the SMX because of work. But after the competition i heard a lot of good news/vibes about the winner.. Last Philippine fashion week, i was very lucky to work with her. :-) She was my model in Pond's show. I like her!! She's tall, very slim, pretty pinay face, and kabog maglakad! ;-) No doubt she won!!! She's really deserving!!!

Patrick Galang

Patrick is a good friend of mine. He is creative, humble, hardworking, determined and most of all, a true friend. I've known him for the past years and I can really say that he's one of the most multi-talented people I know. Last night, he joined me and my family as we celebrate New Year and I had a good vibe that 2010 will be a great year for him. I know he will make it big not only here in the Philippines but internationally.. He is a good designer. His "blade dress" is the cover of Preview Magazine. He's one of the designers of Project Runway Philippines Season 2 and won the first challenge. He got several awards and recognitions such as Seventeen Best Designer, Best Collection for Philippine Fashion Week, Young Designer to Watch Out For.. the list goes on..

He is a writer.

Christmas is one of my favorite occasions.. For me, this is the perfect time to bond with your loved ones :-) its about eating galore, buying gifts, family reunions, chikahan forever, tawanan, iyakan.. time to show love and be happy.. forget all the problems and celebrate the birth of Jesus.. and this year, i attended more than 5 christmas parties that i super enjoyed a lot! hahaha

Relaunching of PICC

I was so overwhelmed last night! I was very honored to be the guest designer at the relaunching event of PICC entitled "Host to the World." It was very successful!! I can't describe the feeling.. It's a dream come true to have a fashion show with a live music by the Philharmonic Orchestra.. :-) it's sooo surreal :-) plus! one of my favorite OPM groups The Company was there too! :-)

What a perfect Christmas gift! :-)

This morning, I had an interview with Ms Dianne Cruz, producer of Global Pinoy Segment from ABS-CBN TFC Channel. I was so excited. We shot it in my new atelier in Makati. Although my space is not super finished yet, we were able to make it look simple and fab on tv. haha.. Still need to meet my interior designer pa. Anyway, the interview was about my work/career, my life as a young designer, my unforgettable expericence when i joined 47th Japan Fashion Design Competition and a lot more.. haha..

Salvacion Lim Higgins or SLIM for short is truly an inspiration to everyone in the fashion industry.. especially to young designers like me. I was given the privilege to attend the super fab launching of her coffee table book (u should buy!!) and i saw the spectacular exhibit at the National Museum! The clothes are amazing.. again, its amazing!! haha.. the quality is impeccable and i must really say that most of the clothes are fashion forward.. something u can still wear today or in the future.. the embellishments are super detailed.. i love the shapes, the cut and the choice of color.. SLIM is the filipino version of Dior or Balenciaga in my opinion :-)

My sister finished a degree in Bachelor or Arts in Nursing at Emilio Aguinaldo College. I admire her.. i salute all the students who finished this course because i think its not easy.. You need determination, patience and passion to finish nursing.. its not all about memorizing and problem solving.. its also about caring.. its about nurturing..

I can't explain what i feel.. But one thing I am sure of is, I'm very happy and fulfilled. I know that my parents are very very happy as well because all their cute kids have finished college! :-) All of us got our college diploma! I can still remember when my father used to tell us that education is the only thing that he can give us aside from his love and support.. My father became a CPA lawyer because of hardwork. He was the one who paid his own tuition fee. He was a working student. When he met my mom, they rented a house and they were sleeping under the stairs because they transformed the whole place into a boarding house for extra profit.. they did it because they want my Dad to finish law. When I was born, 1985.. that was the year when my Dad finally became a lawyer.. that's the reason why my first name is Vic. (short for victory) hahaha.. FYI!

I was in 3rd yr high school, April was in 1st year high school and Ate May was a freshman student in college when our father passed away. My mom doesn't have a work that time because she has devoted her time to take care of us and the family at home.. We were left with nothing.. Thinking about the past.. about what happened.. I can really say that God truly blessed my family. He provided everything. My father's death did not become a reason for us to lose hope.. We worked hard to accomplish our dreams to finish college in a reputable institution no matter what happen.. and we were able to do it!

Ate may.. april.. mommy.. its a job well done! :-) I'm sure daddy is very happy. He's proud of us!

Education is important.. to all the students who are reading this, finish your school! :-) That is one of the best tools to fight poverty and the best ladder to reach success!

Tokyo Day 1

This is it!!! :-) Tokyo Day 1

My flight was 2:30pm but i woke up at 6am because i still need to finish some important things before i leave.. had a fitting with a bride, went to bank to withdraw cash and get yen, endorsed work load to my sewers and beaders.. and finally, packed my stuff on the same day! whew!

when i went to the airport, i saw tracy and nicole. we checked in our luggages and i already expected, i had excess baggage! lol.. good thing tracy dont have much so we combined ours! :-)

i was very excited.. super excited! It was my first time to travel out of the country! i dont know what to expect! but i just want to have fun and enjoy everything!

The weather is amazing! i love it. Its cold.. but not super cold.. i cant explain.. basta i love it! :-) she gave us a little tour and we enjoyed it.. i love Shinjuku..

finally!!! im blogging now! super sorry guys because i was so busy. im enjoying every minute of my tokyo trip thats why most of the time, im out.. and super tired when i get back to my room.. tomorrow is the fashion design competition.. a while ago, we already submitted our entries and saw the works of other designers.. most of them are really amazing.. a lot of brilliant ideas, impeccable craftmanship, and interesting concepts.. all the sketches are now displayed in an exhibit at Meguro.. super nice and first class hotel.. its also the venue of the competition.. i went back to my hotel early because tomorrow is the final judgment day! hahaha.. we need to be at the venue at 7:30am for fitting.. the show will start at 2pm and there is another one at 5pm.. sosyal! 2 times ang show! haha.. im so happy to be part of this.. i would like to thank Jerome Lorico for encouraging me to join. to be part of the 78 plus finalists is an amazing accomplishment. there are 2,500 plus applicants.. we are all winners already.. its a cliche but absolutely true.. more than anything else, my experience here in tokyo is my trophy!!! i will post pictures soon! i have a lot.. again, a lot!!! hahaha..

just got a call from Siti, one of the organizers of the competition in Tokyo and she said that I can pick up my passport tomorrow from the agency. Me, Nicole and Tracy finally got our visa approved! Thank God. My gosh.. they're super strict! As in! Super stressed! haha.. Unlike last year... now, they asked a lot of documents from us.. but its fine.. bottomline is.. we are all going to Tokyo to represent Philippines in the 47th Japan Fashion Design Competition.. im excited! super! its my first time :-)

my ondoy experience

The night before the "super flood day," I was with my friends at Greenbelt and we watched Surrogates (its a nice movie)... I went home right after because I have 8am flight the next day to Bohol to meet a client.. It was raining already that time...

When I got home, my mom talked to me and told me to cancel my flight because she heard in the news that there's a typhoon.

I was in my room and I can hear the strong wind blowing... and the heavy rain falling... I texted my client.

I woke up around 5am and to my surprise, the weather became worse. That’s the time I texted my client and told her that I have to cancel my flight.. I went back to sleep.

Its past 10am in the morning when I woke up. I went down and I was shocked when I saw my mom and my sister shouting because the water was flowing inside our house already.. I immediately checked my car.. and OH MY GOSH! I can’t see the tires anymore because of the flood. I got the key and 2 of my neighbors helped me push the car.. I don’t know what to do because the water is flowing inside already.. I prayed. I brought the car to buendia near taft and park it in front of Pagcor building. I removed all the water and immediately went back to my house.

The water inside our house reached almost knee to thigh level.. But we are still lucky because we were able to move all of our electronic appliances to the 2nd floor immediately in less than an hour. Until now we can’t still believe we did that.

I'm so thankful to God because we were all safe! I think that's the most important thing..

Yesterday, I went to Payatas with my friends and helped the people from the community. We packed food, water old clothes, slippers, shoes, etc. and distributed them to the people. They were very thankful. I was very happy. It’s very tiring but it’s fulfilling.

I pray to God to bless all the generous people who have contributed and shared their blessings.. May God heal the hearts of people who were terribly affected by the flood.. May he continue to do miracles and help everyone who needs help.. I know that God is with us.. He will provide everything we need.. Lets just keep on praying and we should never lose our faith.

It was a very normal day when I was in the gym and I got a txt from someone i dont know yet (She's name is Bennette) telling me that I was nominated for the "Most Inspiring Young Entrepreneur Award".. I don't know what to feel, is it true? who nominated me? or maybe its a scam.. I replied and asked her to call me after 1 hour. She didnt call right away.. I was in a fabric store na when i got a call from her.. and ayun na.. She said that I won! hahaha.. I was really nervous and shaking.. im not being exaggerated but for me, its a BIG thing.. I really love to inspire people especially the youth.. one the reasons why I'm teaching now is because i want to teach and inspire my students.. and this award is something that I'm very very very thankful for and super unexpected.. :-)

so much for the drama.. ;-)

I want to say thank you for Mr. Joey Concepcion, all the staff, Bennette, Sen Manny Villar, Chris Tiu, Karen Davila, Paolo Bediones, everyone!!!! As in everyone!! :-) who worked hard for this endeavor..

Finally, i can share u the good news because i already received yesterday the letter from Japan!

2 weeks ago, i got a good news! YEYYY!! I got an email from Siti, one of the organizers and she told me that I made it! I was chosen to represent Philippines to the 47th International Fashion Design Competition in Tokyo, Japan! ;-) Out of almost 2,500 entries, 3 filipino designers were picked to represent our country.. very miss universe lang diba?! hahaha.. Congratulations to Me, Nicole Mori and Tracy Dizon! :-)

I had the chance to visit and see the body of our beloved President Aquino last night at LSGH. Thanks to Alvin and to Ms Kris Aquino..

While I was on my way there, i thought of the good things about Tita Cory: her contribution to our country.. her role as a mother to her family and as a loving wife to her husband.. But more than anything else, more than the meaning of the yellow ribbon, one thing that i will be forever grateful to her is for being a good example to many people.. She is strong.. determined.. humble and loving..

Now, she is gone.. But I know she will go to heaven..

from the bottom of my heart..

Inspiration: Abstract drawings of my little brother..

"My designs accentuate silhouettes and details, both symmetrical and asymmetrical. Inspired by the concept of paper and pen, I used only the colors black and white to symbolize a clean, black canvass, and the clear markings of dark ink. I chose satin and tulle as my main fabric to give the collection a modern and edgy, yet wearable look."

Miss Universe 2008 and tribute to Crystle Stewart

We were all excited for the big day! Ang official holiday ng mga beky. hahaha.. :-) The Miss Universe 2008! I woke up 6am. Ate my breakfast, did some office works and takbo agad to Nicole's place to see my other friends and to watch the pageant! All of us had our bets and out of the 15 semi finalists, i got only 6. But in fairness, my top 6 were included in the final 10. hahaha.. :-)

My prediction for the final 5: usa, spain, mexico, venezuela, india (i only got 2/5)

Congratulations to the new Miss Universe 2008. Dayana Mendoza from Venezuela. Well, she deserved it! For me, she really did a great job. She was consistent during the swimsuit, evening gown and final q&a.. Congrats also to my dear friend Lex Librea! (sya ang miss venezuela forever.. haha)

I was soooooo sad. I was really rooting for Miss USA, Crystle Stewart to win Miss Universe 2008. She was very good. Smart, sexy and very confident. I must admit, she is not really that pretty but i love her distinct face and to me, thats beautiful!

If you will know her story, you will be inspired. She joined several times before getting the very prestigious Miss USA crown.. she is very hardworking and truly a role model.

I was so sad when she fell yesterday. Because i am very sure if it didn't happen, she would end up as one of the top 5 or even bring home the crown. It was really painful because i like her so much. But that's life.. She has already proven something.. She has inspired many lives.. She stood up when she fell.. And to me, that's more than winning.

Till next year! I had fun.. :-)

I cant wait to blog this! haha.. This is a dream come true! My gosh! Yey! I finally met Divine Lee.. well, i dont want to say this kasi nahihiya ako kay Divine pero sige na nga.. some people are saying that i look like Divine.. (pero she is prettier and sexier.. haha.. 1st runner up lang ako) and to be compared with her is suuuuuuper saya! im flattered. haha :-)

Divine is an epitome of a modern woman. She knows what she wants. She is successful both in career and love. And most of all.. she is a good person. Thats why she's blessed! We just met a while ago and i felt the sincerity and humility every time she talks. She is really nice and suuuuuper fashion!!!! I love it! And most of all.. she loves gays! Thats why.. GAYS LOVE HER TOO!

When i got a txt from her.. i was like! HUWAT!! this is it! Mejo nahiya tlga ako at the beginning pero she was so nice to make me feel comfortable so ayun.. lumabas ang pagka veejay ko.. haha..
